Resources for Callers

Clients may occasionally have issues or questions during your calls. Referrals to the following resources may be appropriate.

9-1-1

If a client has a medical emergency, tell the client you are calling 911 for them, then hang up and dial 911 immediately and provide the client’s location. Then call MIFA at (901) 598-6597 to inform us of the incident.

As a volunteer you cannot give any medical advice. If medical advice is requested, refer them to their doctor or primary care physician. 

2-1-1

Community information and referral resources are available through LINC, the Library Information Center at the Memphis Public Library. LINC maintains a comprehensive database of human services organizations, government agencies, and volunteer groups, and can be accessed by dialing 2-1-1.

Mid-South Food Bank

Clients in need of additional food resources may find help at the Mid-South Food Bank by calling (901) 527-0841.

Aging Commission of the Mid-South

ACMS is the designated Area Agency on Aging and Disability (AAAD) for Fayette, Lauderdale, Shelby, and Tipton Counties in West Tennessee and offers a number of services for aging adults. Call (901) 222-4111.

Shelby County Community Services Agency

CSA offers utility, rent, and mortgage assistance, as well as a medical prescription program which may be beneficial to seniors. 

MIFA Emergency Services

MIFA Emergency Services provides utility, rent, and mortgage assistance for Shelby County households who have lost income or experienced a recent crisis.
