Volunteer Opportunities: COVID-19 Response

Thank you for your interest in supporting MIFA as our community responds to the pandemic.

We are grateful that so many volunteers in our generous community have offered to help during this challenging time. Our programs are making adjustments every day to serve our clients the best way we can. The volunteer opportunities we can offer at this time are listed below.

Call Meals on Wheels clients to check in

We have openings for MIphone Buddy callers. This opportunity involves calling up to 10 seniors weekly for brief check-ins. Contact Kristi Estes at kestes@mifa.org or (901) 529-4521.

Deliver Meals on Wheels

A number of volunteers have suspended their deliveries due to COVID-19, and we need short-term support to cover their routes. Volunteer requirements: application, background check, and online training (click here to download the training slideshow).

Deliveries take place Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday only beginning at 9 a.m. These deliveries will include hot meals as well as boxes of shelf-stable or frozen meals, so some moderate lifting is required.

Since the pandemic began, we have made a number of changes to our delivery procedures to keep our volunteers, staff, and clients safe, including masks and gloves, curbside pick-up of meals at MIFA, and touch-free deliveries to clients.

Volunteers must observe the following guidelines to limit transmission of coronavirus to our clients:

  • If you're feeling ill, someone in your home is ill, or you have recently been exposed to someone who is ill, stay home.
  • Wash your hands. In general, hand-washing is among the best ways to prevent the spread of illness. Wash your hands before and after your volunteer shift and consider using hand sanitizer during your route.
  • Pick up and drop off curbside. In order to maintain social distancing at MIFA, food pick-ups and cooler drop-offs will be made at curbside. A staff person will meet you at your car and load the coolers and boxes for you.
  • Use the app. We encourage the use of the Mobile Meals app in order to reduce paperwork, pen sharing, and close contact. Please see the instructions on this page. Staff will also be glad to answer questions to help you with initial setup.
  • Wear a mask. Wear a mask covering your nose and mouth to limit the transfer of germs between you and the client.
  • Do not enter the client's home. Many of our clients are understandably concerned about contact with others, so please respect their personal space. Keep your distance and keep your visit short.
