Volunteer Opportunities: Coronavirus Response

Thank you for your interest in supporting MIFA as our community responds to the growing threat of coronavirus.

We are grateful that so many volunteers in our generous community have offered to help during this challenging time. However, as this public health crisis develops, our programs are making adjustments every day to serve our clients the best way we can. It is difficult for our staff to respond to individual requests. The volunteer opportunities we can offer at this time are listed below.

Call Meals on Wheels clients to check in

Soon we will begin checking in on clients by phone. You can help us make these calls if you have volunteered at MIFA and we have your volunteer application on file. Contact Kristi Estes at kestes@mifa.org or (901) 529-4521.

Deliver Meals on Wheels

If you have delivered meals before and we have your volunteer application on file, you can deliver MIFA Meals on Wheels. We are unable to provide training and background checks at this time.

Deliveries take place Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday only beginning at 9 a.m. These deliveries will include boxes of shelf-stable or frozen meals, so some moderate lifting is required.

Volunteers must observe the following guidelines to limit transmission of coronavirus to our clients:

  • Do not enter the client's home. Many of our clients are understandably concerned about contact with others, so please respect their personal space. Keep your distance and keep your visit short.
  • If you're feeling ill, if someone in your home is ill, or if you have recently been in close contact with someone who is ill, stay home.
  • Wash your hands. In general, hand-washing is among the best ways to prevent the spread of illness. Meals staff members will provide gloves for your deliveries. Wash your hands before and after your volunteer shift and consider using hand sanitizer during your route.
  • Cover your nose and mouth during delivery. Because masks are in short supply even for the medical community, please find another solution—scarf, bandana, shirt, etc.—to limit the transfer of germs between you and the client.

Contact Kristi Estes at kestes@mifa.org or (901) 529-4521.

Other ways to serve

These are the only volunteer opportunities we can offer until further notice. For more ways to serve in the community, visit Volunteer Odyssey.
