Volunteer Stories
MIFA Volunteers share their experiences

MIFA volunteers come from all around the city each day to serve our Meals on Wheels senior clients. Hear from new timers and regulars, working and retired, young and old!

Our vision is uniting the community through service and our volunteers help us make that possible. In this blog series, we will share volunteer stories, experiences, and more. If you have a story that you want to share please email hwalker@mifa.org

Tyler Lindsey: MIFA Holiday Cards

This year’s holiday card was created for MIFA by Tyler Lindsey, a graphic designer and adjunct professor at the University of Memphis.

Tyler has fond memories of riding along with his mom as she delivered MIFA Meals on Wheels, but designing the holiday card is one of his first interactions with MIFA as an adult.

“Just looking at the website made me want to have the interpersonal experience,” he said. “I thought, ‘I want to be a part of this.’ I want to use this experience as a springboard to get more involved.”

When asked why Tyler chose to support MIFA in this way, he said that you don’t always get a project that has a bigger purpose. “When I was in undergrad, I studied a manifesto called First Things First 2000 Version by Ken Garland. It’s a call for graphic designers to use their talents for more worthy causes. It shouldn’t always be about meeting a bottom line. Projects like these re-instill my love for what I do”.

He encourages others to find their own ways to give back: “If you are looking for volunteer opportunities or if you have a skill or talent to offer, this is an organization to share it with. If you are a college student, this is a great way to try it out as a real-world experience. For me, having done this type of work for 15 years, it teaches me new things, not just about how to create a card, but you’re giving value by helping others. It’s a two-way street.”

We are grateful for Tyler’s art and his commitment to giving back to his community through MIFA. Thank you, Tyler!
